The History of the Minhiriathrim
AgonThalia, Dec 18, 06 10:12 AM
History of the Minhiriath: From Wikipedia

Minhiriath (Sindarin for 'Between Rivers' and thus an Elvish form of Mesopotamia) was located in Eriador, a name for all the lands between the Hithaeglir and the Ered Luin. Minhiriath had no clear border in the north, but to the south, and east and west it was bounded by river and sea : the Brandywine, the Greyflood and Belegaer, 'The Great Sea'.

The original inhabitants of Minhiriath (Minhiriathrim) were descended from the same Atani as the ancestors of the Númenóreans, but because they spoke mutually unintelligible languages, the Númenóreans did not class the Minhiriathrim as Middle Men.

When the large-scale deforestation of their land began under the Númenórean 'Ship Kings' after the 7th century Second Age, the minhiriathrim became openly hostile, and were persecuted. Only those who "fled from Minhiriath into the dark woods of the great Cape of Eryn Vorn" survived. Most, if not all of these forest-dwellers subsequently "welcomed Sauron and hoped for his victory over the Men of the Sea", but they were to be disappointed - and permanently trapped - by Sauron's burning of much of the rest of the surviving forest, and final defeat, in S.A. 1701.

After our brethren were destroyed, burned and scattered by Sauron’s forces, those who fled Minhiriath and survived Sauron’s purge were divided and homeless. Some, still loyal to Sauron joined him, while others, who preferred to take revenge on those who destroyed their forests decided to join the leagues of men, elves and dwarves who sought to destroy Sauron.

They called themselves “The Marauders of Minhiriath” or “The Minhiriathrim Marauders”. Lost, homeless, desperate and filled with a hatred of Sauron, they allied themselves in the war against Sauron. There they found themselves with other peoples who had been scattered. Unfettered by the morals and laws of other "civilized" societies, they relied on their wits and their cunning. The Minhiriath value loyalty above all other civilized "moral". The Minhiriathrim Marauders are the rough men who, while some consider them to be dangerous and too independant, they are often called upon to do the dirty deeds necessary to protect the freedom of all peoples.

After the destruction of Sauron by Isildur, the Minhiriathrim Marauders no longer became a group of men, but an idea; an idea that all peoples will survive the evils of the age. Elves and Dwarves who had lost their homes and lands joined with the Minhiriathrim Marauders and started to form nomadic bands of explorers and traders. The Marauders began to wander the lands, exploring distant parts of middle earth and collecting rare and valuable items to trade with all peoples. Their caravans travelled the world, their distinctive tent a signal to all people that the Minhiriath were there (and ready to sell). This was the history of the Marauders until the dark clouds over Mordor started to form again.

Each Minhiriath felt the stirring, a horrible, yet familiar feeling in their soul. Sauron was gaining power and the fires of Mordor were about to be unleashed again. The Minhiriathrim Marauders, gathered their arms that were, until now, used for self defense and hunting. They made contact with their old alliances, some of whom were ready to kill again, others were soft and fat. Over the years, the Minhiriath kept their skills sharp, without a home or a land, they mapped the world, they studied the beasts and became true explorers.
